Thigpen speaks out on Kure Beach seismic blasting
Kure Beach, NC—Jason Thigpen, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District, attended the Kure Beach Town Council meeting tonight to voice his objections to seismic testing off Kure Beach.
“I believe that it’s essential that we protect our oceans and beaches, some of the most valuable resources we have in coastal North Carolina,” said Thigpen. “These resources are the backbone of our local economy and the driving force for attracting new people and business to the area.
“Seismic surveys such as those envisioned off Kure Beach are known to be harmful to marine life, including causing deafness in whales, disturbing navigation and migratory abilities, disrupting reproduction and driving sport and commercial fishes from the waters we fish in. Furthermore, we all know that this testing is merely a prelude to offshore drilling for oil and gas. Drilling off the shores of North Carolina beaches has the potential to destroy local tourism, the character of our communities and our way of life.
“Back in 2011, Wrightsville Beach passed an ordinance opposing offshore drilling and testing, and I hope Kure Beach will follow their lead. If the Kure Beach Town Council wants to take a position on what direction North Carolina and the nation should be taking regarding energy and energy security, it should endorse policies that encourage the growth of renewable energies—wind, solar, ocean wave, biomass and geothermal energies.”
